Minimum premiums
Make sure you're not paying over the odds just because the insurance company is applying its minimum charge.
Here's our guide to what minimum premiums are - and how you may still be able to get a good deal even when a minimum premium does apply.
What is a minimum premium?
Insurers usually have a minimum premium for a year’s insurance. This is mainly to cover their administrative expenses. If you are a very small business, it can pay to shop around for the insurer with the lowest minimum premium.
How much is a minimum premium?
The minimum premiums for certain standard-alone liability covers could be as low as £150.00. But the minimum premium can range up to £1,000.00 for policies that contain several types of insurance. A lot depends on what business you're in, and on the size and nature of the insurance.

Certain “take-it or leave-it” internet deals may be cheaper because they apply lower minimum premiums - but remember the cover they offer may not be appropriate for your business.

Making the most of minimum premiums
Sometimes you may have found the best deal that's going, but it's still subject to a minimum premium. You can often tell when an insurance company is applying a minimum premium because it will be a round figure like £500.00 or £750.00.
If you think a minimum premium may have been applied:
- first find out for sure by asking your broker or insurance company if your premium is a minimum charge
- find out if you can get any extra cover for the minimum premium. It's often possible to buy some additional cover without going over the minimum charge.
